1. Cologne
Stay
About the destination: Cologne, a centre for industry and transportation since ancient Roman times, has an extremely rich cultural tradition. During WWII 95% of the city was demolished, but the city miraculously recovered and many of its old churches and monuments have been meticulously restored. Cologne is now an attractive and lively centre of European art. It’s worth visiting this city, if only for the famous cathedral, though there’s much more to see. Situated on the Rhine River, the skyline of Cologne is dominated by the cathedral. This breathtaking cathedral, with its brilliant stained-glass windows, is justly famous as one of the world’s purest expressions of High-Gothic architecture. Cologne has one of the most extensive old town centres in the country, and the cathedral is its heart and soul. Across the square from the cathedral is the Römisch-Germanisches Museum, which displays artefacts from the original Roman colony. The Wallrof-Richartz museum and Museum Ludwig is a must for art enthusiasts. It is one of the country’s finest art galleries and makes brilliant use of natural light. A host of 12th and 13th century churches and several more of an ultra-modern post-war style also dot the streets of the old town. Cosmopolitan, open-minded, friendly are characteristics describing people from Cologne. Evenings and weekends in the city are like miniature carnivals, with bustling crowds and lots of things to do. Beer is the beverage of choice and there are lots of places to enjoy it.

4. Heidelberg
Stay
About the destination: Heidelberg is located in South-eastern Germany along the Neckar River, in the region Rhein-Neckar in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Heidelberg is part of Germany's "Castle Road". Heidelberg is quite famous for the castle, of course, but has so much more to offer, like the stroll along the banks of River Neckar, or even a walk along the famous Philosophenweg, which stretches along the northern bank of Neckar. Strolling along the Neckar, enjoy the lush green gardens of the Neckarweisse, with their fountains and open spaces. The castle is a beautiful set of ruins located on a steep hill overlooking the old town and the Neckar River. From the castle there is the most magnificent view over the old town. The castle houses the German Pharmaceutical Museum which has pharmaceutical equipment from the 18th and 19th centuries. The charming, fairy-tale like old town has seen very little modern development. Strolling these ancient, narrow streets is like travelling back in time. Don't be in a hurry. Stop and look around. Browse in the shops, have a meal in one of the restaurants, and enjoy the atmosphere. In the old town we find the Kornmarkt, the city's primary market square lined with shops and cafes. The Alte Brücke or Karl-Theodor-Brücke connects the old town with the suburb of Neuenheim on the opposite shore of the Neckar. Romantic and picturesque, this pearl of the Neckar, far from being a museum-city, is now a lively university town with an intense, vibrant cultural life.

5. Koblenz
Stay
About the destination: Koblenz spelled Coblenz before 1926, is a German city on the banks of the Rhine and of the Moselle, a multi-nation tributary. Koblenz was established as a Roman military post by Drusus around 8 B.C. Its name originates from the Latin (ad) cōnfluentēs, meaning "(at the) confluence". The actual confluence is today known as the "German Corner", a symbol of the unification of Germany that features an equestrian statue of Emperor William I. The city celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 1992. It ranks in population behind Mainz and Ludwigshafen am Rhein to be the third-largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its usual-residents' population is 112,000 (as at 2015). Koblenz lies in a narrow flood plain between high hill ranges, some reaching mountainous height, and is served by an express rail and autobahn network. It is part of the populous Rhineland.
